Human Rights Film Fest Visits UH-Hilo

The Human Rights Watch Traveling Film Festival is bringing three films to Hilo this week.

The film fest opens 7 p.m., Thursday, Oct. 17, with “Camp 14” and concludes on Oct. 18 with two films: “Alias Ruby Blade: A Story of Love and Revolution” at 3:30 p.m. and “Rafea: Solar Mama” at 5 p.m.

The films will be shown on the UH-Hilo campus in the University Classroom Building (UCB) Room 127. Free admission. Public invited.

The festival “bring(s) to life human rights abuses through storytelling in a way that challenges each individual to empathize and demand justice for all people,” said a release for the festival.

“Camp 14” is a portrait of a young man who grew up imprisoned by dehumanizing violence in North Korea yet still found the will to escape.

“Alias Ruby Blade” is the love story of a human rights activist and a political prisoner in East Timor.

“Rafea: Solar Mama” is an inspiring story of an illiterate Bedouin woman from a
poverty-stricken community in the Jordanian desert who learns to be a solar energy engineer at India’s Barefoot College.
