Mixed Bag of Results for Hawaii Hotels
Big Island hotels had a record-setting monthly average daily rate in August at $225.49, up 13.1%, but fewer visitors rented rooms, according to a Hospitality Advisors report in Pacific Business News.
Occupancy decreased by 3.3 percentage points to 62.3% in August, which was attributed to a 0.9% decrease in visitor arrivals and fewer visitors choosing to stay in hotels.
But factored in with the average daily rate increase, the amount of revenue per available room (RevPAR) at Big Island hotels increased 7.4% to $140.48, according to the Hospitality Advisors report.
Meanwhile the posh Kohala Coast hotels on the Big Island also set a new average daily rate record of $310.57 in August, an 11.2% increase. Occupancy at the Kohala Coast hotels also decreased, however, 3.6 percentage points from 71.6% to 68%.
Statewide, only Kauai saw an increase in occupancy but the gain was less than 1% during the same period. Otherwise, other Hawaii islands had results similar to those seen on the Big Island during the month.
