UPDATE: Kona Drowning Victim Identified

***Updated 3:42 p.m. Monday, Sept. 30.***

A woman who apparently drowned Friday afternoon while snorkeling at a North Kona beach has been identified by police as 44-year-old Carol Vandermyden of Captain Cook.

Vandermyden was spotted by beach-goers floating face-down in the area of Rocky Cove, located on the north side of Kua Bay.

An autopsy will be done to determine the exact cause of death.

Posted 11:08 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 28:

A 43-year-old woman apparently drowned Friday while swimming at Kua Bay in North Kona.

Fire department personnel responding to a 2:11 p.m. call found that bystanders had pulled the woman from the water and had begun CPR.

People at the beach told paramedics that the woman had been spotted floating face-down in the water.

The victim was transported to Kona Community Hospital.

A fire department spokesman said the woman, and her husband who was with her at the beach, are believed to be residents of Kona.
