Wong Named St. Louis’ Top Minor League Player in June

Hilo’s Kolten Wong was named the Minor League Player of the Month in the St. Louis Cardinals organization after batting .375 in the month of May at the Triple-A Level.

Wong has spent the entire season with the Memphis Redbirds, the AAA affiliate of the Cardinals. The former first round draft pick hit four home runs and drove in eight during the month. He also added four stolen bases.

May was highlighted by a season-best 15-game hitting streak where he hit a white-hot .429 at the plate.

“Kolten had a tremendously consistent month with the bat, while also continuing to play good defense at second base,” said Cardinals Director of Minor League Operations John Vuch in a press release from the organization. “He’s been a big part of the success that Memphis has had this season”.

On the season, the Kamehameha-Hawai`i graduate is batting .327, tops on his team and 12th in the Pacific Coast League. He also leads his team with 69 hits and five triples. He has hit four home runs on the season and picked up 20 RBI.

The month of June is starting a little slow for Wong. Through three games this month, he is 3-for-13 at the plate with two runs batted in. He failed to pick up a hit in the second game of a doubleheader Sunday against Omaha, where he hit 0-for-3. The Redbirds won 5-0 to close out the doubleheader.

Memphis continues their series at Omaha tonight. First pitch is scheduled for 2:05 p.m. Hawai`i time.

Teammate Kevin Siegrist was named the organization’s Minor League Pitcher of the Month for May. The left-handed hurler split time between the Redbirds and the organization’s Double-A affilate in Springfield. He didn’t allow an earned run in 13.2 innings of work and picked up a win in nine outings.
