BIIF Softball Teams Swept in DII State Tournament Quarterfinals

For the fourth consecutive year, the Datahouse / Hawai`i High School Athletic Association Division II Softball Tournament will not feature a Big Island team in the semifinal round.

Both Big Island Interscholastic Federation teams in the championship bracket lost Wednesday at Maui High School’s Patsy Mink Field. Kohala fell to Nanakuli 13-2 to drop to the consolation bracket. Third-seeded Kamehameha-Hawai`i joined them in the consolation round with an 8-7 loss to Kauai High School.

BIIF Division II Player of the Year Mykala Tokunaga struggled in the circle for the Warriors, allowing eight runs on nine hits with four walks and three strikeouts. All eight of those runs were scored in the first three innings, negating the four runs Kamehameha-Hawai`i put on the board in the first two frames.

The BIIF champion put a dent in Kauai’s lead with a pair of runs in the fifth inning to get within two runs of the Kauai Interscholastic Federation’s runner-up squad. They scored one more run in the sixth to get within a run at 8-7. The rally fell short in the final inning with the tying run standing at third base. Namele Naipo-Arsiga grounded out to second base to end the game.

Nanakuli 13, Kohala 2

Kohala High School did something Tuesday that no other BIIF team would do during the Division II state softball tournament by winning a game that would advance them forward in the brackets. That run ended Wednesday with an 11 run loss to Nanakuli to the quarterfinal round.

Kohala’s Ashlyn Van Zandt struggled in the circle, allowing 13 runs on 14 hits in the complete game loss. Nanakuli scored three runs in the first and third innings, put up four more in the sixth, and extended their lead with a three-run seventh inning.

Nanakuli starter Koko Chyanne no-hit the Cowgirls in her five innings of work. She walked two batters and struck out four to take the victory. Reliever Emma Kawaiaea allowed a pair of runs and hits in the final two innings.

Kaiser 17, Konawaena 6

Konawaena’s state tournament ended early Wednesday following their second loss in as many days.

After falling to Aiea 11-1 Tuesday afternoon, the Wildcats were TKO’d by Kaiser 17-6 in a game that ended in six innings because of the sport’s mercy rule.

Kaiser opened the game with six runs off of Konawaena starter Shyla Victor, who pitched all six innings of work. Victor allowed another run in the second and a combined 10 more runs in the final three innings of the game. For the game, Victor gave up 18 hits and walked three.

In the loss, everyone in the Konawaena batting order tallied a hit. The Wildcats scored two runs each in the third, fourth, and fifth innings to try to stay in the game, but could not hang with the 17 run, 18 hit barrage from the Golden Hawks.
