In business news around the island, two golf courses are for sale while a Hilo jewelry shop is shutting its doors. A new photovoltaic solar farm is operational in Puna and Gov. Neil Abercrombie will attend its blessing tomorrow.

Two Golf Courses For Sale  

Two Hawaii Island golf courses are looking for new owners. According to Pacific Business News, the Makalei Golf Club in Kailua-Kona and the Volcano Golf and Country Club in Hawaii Volcanoes National Park are on the market.

Located north of Kona above the Keahole airport with ocean views, the Makalei Golf Club sale includes nearly 1,600 acres. The current owners, New York-based Gramercy Capital Corp., bought the property in 2008 when it was in foreclosure and are asking $14 million for the golf course.

On the other side of the island, the Volcano Golf Club is being sold by a Japanese investor who has owned it and managed the golf course for 30 years. The investor is selling his leasehold, as Kamehameha Schools owns the land under the golf course. Asking price for the Volcano Golf Club and golf course is $2.2 million.

Honolulu-based Dornbush & Co. is marketing both courses.

Timefix & Jewelry Closing

Timefix & Jewelry in Hilo is closing. Located in the Prince Kuhio Plaza, the jewelry sales and watch repair company is closing its doors by early May.

Although there have been reports of the store closing for close to three years, the owners, Honolulu–based Ming Hing Co., say this time their lease has expired and they plan to retire.

The store is holding a sale through the end of April that includes fixtures and display cases.

Pohoiki PV Solar Farm Blessing Tomorrow

The Pohoiki PV Solar Farm in Puna will hold its initial launch and blessing tomorrow. Gov. Neil Abercrombie will attend the blessing, which will be conducted by Aunty Mahealani Henry with music provided by Dewi Maile Lim and Friends.

Greenpower Solutions LLC designed the solar farm to produce energy, food, and employment- three priorities for the state of Hawai`i. The plant is composed of 400 solar panels mounted on 9-foot-tall structures.

The structures act as a frame for a greenhouse and aquaponic food growing system. Electricity is produced from the plant and is sold to Helco under a 20 year feed-in-tariff contract. The plant will produce enough energy to supply about 25 homes in Puna.
