An update on efforts to clean up unexploded ordnance in South Kohala will top the agenda Thursday of the Waimea Community Association’s Town Meeting.
The meeting begins at 5:15 p.m. at the Waimea School cafeteria. The public is invited.
The cleanup of unexploded ordnance, also known as UXO, is funded by the federal government and being carried out by the US Army Corps of Engineers and contractor Environet.
The program will include historical video footage of World War II military training in what is called the Former Waikoloa Maneuver Area, which encompasses a large portion of Waimea, Waikoloa and the South Kohala coastline.

The presentation includes interviews with Waimea community members about the cleanup effort and UXO safety protocols.
Unexploded ordnance has periodically been found in a variety of areas including Hapuna Beach, Waikoloa Village, Parker Ranch and in a Waimea school garden.
The meeting will include an update on the transport of eucalyptus logs from the Hamakua Coast to Kawaihae’s harbor, and updates on key bills in the state Legislature involving the South and North Kohala areas.
