UH Hilo Basketball vs. Chaminade Will Go As Scheduled

Two days after bad weather and floor conditions caused the cancellation of the University of Hawai`i at Hilo’s basketball doubleheader against Azusa Pacific, athletic directors from both UH Hilo and Chaminade discussed the possibility of moving Tuesday’s scheduled doubleheader against Chaminade back a day to ensure safe playing conditions.

However, after those discussions, no changes were made to the schedule and both Chaminade and UHH will play men’s and women’s basketball Tuesday night at the UHH Gymnasium.

PacWest Conference commissioner Bob Hogue appeared on ESPN Radio and ESPNHawaii.com’s “The Josh Pacheco Show” and confirmed the discussions. He also said that UH Hilo athletic director Dexter Irvin told him that the weather forecast for Tuesday night shows a strong improvement in comparison to the 48 hours of rain and wind that forced a flash flood advisory to be in place for the island.

“It was determined…the weather conditions have improved,” said Hogue of his conversation with Irvin. “The floor is dry, the floor is fine, and he (Irvin) has contacted Chaminade’s athletic director, saying their recommendation is to go as scheduled. Subsequently, I talked to Chaminade’s athletic director and about the discussion and he’s 100% supportive of that as well.”

Saturday’s women’s basketball contest was stopped after less than nine minutes of game play had elapsed after four different Azusa Pacific players slipped and fell on the moist floor. The last player, Amanda Shaw, had left the court on crutches. The men’s game never started as both athletic directors decided to cancel the games at 6:30 p.m., an hour before the scheduled tip time.

According to The Weather Channel online, Tuesday night’s forecast calls for showers all evening, although fewer showers are expected at around 7 p.m. Winds are also expected to slow down, getting under 10 miles per hour.

The women’s game will tip at 5 p.m. with the men to follow at 7:30 p.m. Both games can be heard on ESPN Radio and ESPNHawaii.com.
