Apparently communication — or education, for that matter — is not always what it’s cracked up to be.

The Learning Coalition, a group which claims to be dedicated to assisting Hawaii’s public school system, is running an advertisement on the Honolulu Star-Advertiser’s website that rather ironically struggles to get its spelling right.

The slogan of the “orgainization” is Let’s Be Smart About Education.

On its website – which repeats the misspelling on the header of each page – the group said it is “dedicated to excellence in Hawaii’s public schools.”

The group repeats the misspelled word on each of its website's pages, as this partial screen grab shows (click to enlarge).

“We believe that in order to achieve and sustain excellence, our stakeholders and systems must communicate effectively …,” it said.

The Learning Coalition describes itself as Honolulu-based and non-partisan, and provides a variety of links and other information on education for parents and educators.

Although it doesn’t discuss funding sources, it lists the group’s “investments” in various educational groups to the tune of nearly $375,000 last year.

Surely there’s room in that budget for a spell-checking program, or even a dictionary.

State records show that The Learning Coalition is registered as a non-profit, but is a subsidiary of The Corporation Company, a domestic for-profit company. That in turn is a subsidiary of CT Corporation System, a foreign profit company incorporated in Delaware.

The Learning Coalition did not respond to an email from Big Island Now requesting to discuss its ad.
