Alaska Quake Poses No Tsunami Threat to Hawaii

A 7.6-magnitude earthquake that shook Southeastern Alaska Friday night poses no tsunami threat to Hawaii, federal officials said.

However, the West Coast and Alaska Tsunami Warning Center has issued an advisory for shores of the Pacific closer to the earthquake.

According to the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center, the quake occurred at 10:58 p.m. Hawaii time.

The tremor was followed within the next hour by several aftershocks greater than magnitude 4.

While a destructive tsunami threat to Hawaii is not expected, authorities say some coastal areas in Hawaii could experience small non-destructive sea level changes and strong or unusual currents lasting up to several hours.

Such effects are estimated to begin at 4:28 a.m. Saturday morning.
