Vehicle Kills Intoxicated Woman Sitting on Kona Highway

Kona police are investigating a fatal collision involving a pedestrian Tuesday night in South Kona.

Bystanders told police that a 30-year-old woman was sitting in the northbound lane of Highway 11 near the 107-mile marker when she was struck by a north-bound BMW sedan operated by a 50-year-old Captain Cook man.

The woman, identified as Jasmin K. Robertson of Honaunau, had been drinking and appeared to be intoxicated, police said.

Paramedics arriving at the scene at 6:44 p.m. examined the woman but could not find a pulse. She was transported to Kona Community Hospital where she was pronounced dead at 7:15 p.m.

The driver of the BMW was wearing his seatbelt and was not injured, police said.

One lane of the roadway was closed while officers investigated the incident.

This was the 36^th traffic-related fatality on the Big Island this year compared to 18 at this point in 2011.
