Brown water advisory issued for West Hawai‘i coast
State health officials report a brown water advisory is in effect from Keokea Beach Park to Ka Lae Point (South Point) in West Hawai‘i.
High surf and storm surge from Hurricane Lowell caused coastal waters to reach into foliage and other areas above the normal high-water mark, including roadways.
The public is advised to stay out of coastal waters that appear brown and murky because of possible runoff that might be in the water containing pesticides and other chemicals, animal fecal matter, dead animals, pathogens and debris.
Not all coastal areas could be impacted by runoff; however, if the water is brown you are advised to stay out.
Continue to practice good personal hygiene and follow-up with your primary care physician if you have any health concerns.
Remember: if the water is brown, turn around.
