Wind advisory issued for portions of Hawai‘i Island
A wind advisory for portions of Hawai‘i Island will take effect at noon and is expected to continue through the week.
According to the National Weather Service in Honolulu, the winds are not directly related to Hurricane Lowell, which is passing several hundred miles south of the Hawaiian Islands. The 25 to 35 mph winds are coming from the east with gusts up to 55 mph expected.
Winds will be strongest through passes and higher terrain of the North and South Kohala Districts and near South Point in the Ka‘ū District.
The advisory is expected to end on Friday at 6 a.m.
Winds this strong can tear off shingles, knock down tree branches, blow away tents and awnings and make it difficult to steer, especially for drivers of high-profile vehicles.
Watch out for falling tree branches when walking or driving. Make sure tents and awnings are secure or take them down. Be prepared for power outages.
