Hawaiʻi County Department of Water Supply advises Waiʻōhinu-Nāʻālehu customers until further notice to boil all water from the tap used for drinking and cooking purposes, if their water service was restored. DO NOT drink the water water without boiling it first.

The department on the afternoon of Aug. 19 began pumping its Nāʻālehu well with an emergency generator and a very limited portion of the waterlines will have water.

Boiling destroys bacteria and other organisms that could be present in the water.

Bring all tap water to a rolling boil for a minimum of 1 minute and let it cool before using. Boiled or bottled water should be used for drinking, making ice, brushing teeth, washing dishes and food preparation.

Customers also can add between 1 and 8 drops of new, unscented liquid chlorine bleach with a strength of 5% to 6%, such as Clorox, to each gallon of water for disinfection.

Fill a clean container with water, add the bleach and let the water stand for at least 30 minutes before using. The water will have a slight chlorine odor.

The precautionary boil water notice will remain in effect until additional water quality testing is completed.
