Big Island could see severe weather starting Friday

Severe weather is encroaching on the main Hawaiian Islands starting on Aug. 14, which may impact the Big Island.

According to the National Weather Service, an area of disorganized showers and thunderstorms associated with a broad area of low pressure appears to be forming about 1,200 miles east-southeast of the island chain.

A tropical depression, or storm, is expected to form during the next couple of days that may impact Hawai‘i Island, according to the Hawai‘i County Civil Defense Agency. As a precaution, the county advises residents to take time to prepare for possible heavy rain and high winds arriving as early Friday evening.

Because the system has not yet developed, uncertainty remains in the long-range track and intensity forecasts, according to the National Weather Service.
