One lane open on Old Mamalahoa Highway after utility lines block roadway

Authorities are advising motorists to avoid the east entrance to ʻŌʻokala Village on Old Mamalahoa Highway after utility lines fell on the roadway, restricting traffic in the area.

One lane remains open at the east entrance, off Hawaiʻi Belt Road (Highway 19) near mile marker 29.5, but officials are urging drivers to use caution and avoid the area if possible. The traffic disruption is expected to last for approximately six hours.

Motorists traveling to or from ʻŌʻōkala Village are encouraged to use the west entrance on Old Mamalahoa Highway, which connects to Highway 19 near mile marker 30.5.

Police did not immediately provide additional details about what caused the utility lines to obstruct the roadway or whether any injuries or power outages were reported.
