Hawai‘i Fire Department issued a wildfire advisory for Kawaihae because of a wildland fire in South Kohala.

A mandatory evacuation is ordered for residents of Kawaihae Village Subdivision. Hawai‘i County Civil Defense says residents should use Kawaihae Road and shelter at Waimea Community Center, located at 65-1260 Kawaihae Road.

Also because of the wildland fire:

  • The following roads are closed: Queen Kaʻahumanu Highway, from Mauna Kea Beach Drive to Kawaihae Road and from the intersection to Waiaka Bridge in Waimea. Those portions of the road will likely be closed several hours.
  • The following roads are open for local traffic only: Kohala Mountain Road, Waikōloa Road and ʻAkoni Pule Road.
  • Expect traffic delays. Avoid the area when possible.

Hawai‘i County Civil Defense said updates will be provided should conditions change.
