Top 10 things to do on Big Island for June 5-11: National Donut Day, Puna Taiko Summer Festival, ‘Songs of the Sea’ and more
Hey, Big Island! It’s another week full of a unique variety of events happening.
You can celebrate National Donut Day with KTA Super Stores Bakeries around the island; shop, eat and enjoy entertainment during Puna Taiko’s annual Summer Festival Crafts and Vendor Fair in Kea‘au or join Waimea Community Chorus for a spring concert inspired by water, waves and cultural and emotional connections with the ocean during “Songs of the Sea” in Waimea.

No. 1 — Celebrate National Donut Day at KTA (Various locations, June 5)
When: Beginning at 5:30 a.m.
Location: All Big Island KTA Super Stores Bakeries
Save the date! National Donut Day is almost here. The day celebrates the delicious donut while honoring The Salvation Army Lassies, women who served donuts to soldiers during World War II. Stop by the KTA Bakery nearest you for fresh donuts. While supplies last.

No. 2 — Kohala Jodo Mission Temple Rummage Sale (Kapa‘au, June 6-7)
When: 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. both days
Location: Kohala Jodo Mission Temple, 54-541 Kapa‘au Road
Same place. Same great finds! Find tons of great finds, plus lots of discounted prices on household items and more, with new inventory added. There also will be food for sale, including andagi, manju, banana bread and more, while supplies last. All proceeds support the temple and community.

No. 3 — Puna Taiko Summer Festival Craft and Vendor Fair (Kea‘au, June 6)
When: 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Location: Puna Hongwanji Mission, 16-492 Old Volcano Road
Shop some awesome vendors and crafts, eat ‘ono food and enjoy awesome entertainment all while supporting local businesses and more than 70 vendors. This is an event you don’t want to miss!

No. 4 — Work a traditional Hawaiian agricultural site (Hawai‘i Volcanoes National Park, June 6 and 13)
When: 9:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Location: Kahuku Visitor Contact Station (turn into Kahuku near the 70.5-mile marker on Highway 11 in Kaʻū)
Com work a traditional Hawaiian agricultural and archeological site from the 1400s. A team of University of Hawaiʻi archeologists is excavating, located in the Kahuku Unit. The hike is moderate to difficult. Free, but space is limited.

No. 5 — National Animal Rights Day (Laupāhoehoe, June 7)
When: Noon to 3 p.m.
Location: Magical Creatures Sanctuary, 36-576 Spencer Road
Honor the animals that can’t speak for themselves and celebrate the community showing up for them. It’s a free afternoon of remembrance, compassion and hope, including a memorial ceremony, plant-based potluck, music and more. RSVP to help organizers prepare.

No. 6 — “Songs of the Sea” (Waimea, June 7)
When: 2 p.m.
Location: Kahilu Theatre, 67-1186 Lindsey Road
The spring concert of Waimea Community Chorus is inspired by water, waves as well as cultural and emotional connections with the ocean, offering a musical experience through songs exploring nature, travel, memory and renewal.

No. 7 — “Gathering Light at the Niʻaulani Sculpture Garden” opening reception (Volcano, June 7)
When: 4 to 6 p.m.
Location: Volcano Art Center, Niʻaulani Campus, 19-4074 Old Volcano Road
Five new pieces, including a community sculpture, explore the play of light and shadow with other environmental elements. Kumu Keala Ching will open the event with a blessing followed by hula by Hālau Ke ‘Olu Makani o Mauna Loa. Light snacks and refreshments will be served.

No. 8 — Little Stars Theatre Camp Session 1 (Waimea, June 8-12)
When: 9 a.m. to noon each day
Location: Kahilu Theatre, 67-1186 Lindsey Road
Session 1’s theme is “Once Upon a Stage — Fairytale Musical Theatre Camp.” Ages 5 to 7 years old. Step into the magical world of princes, dragons and fairies during this playful introduction to acting, music, movement and imagination.

When: 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Location: Hawai‘i Keiki Museum, 69-250 Waikōloa Beach Drive
Keiki ages 7 to 13 years old will enjoy a week of art, science, culture and fun designed to spark curiosity and creativity in young explorers navigating the islands in virtual reality, learning wayfinding skills, building clay ecosystems, creating watercolor paintings and more. When: 7 to 9 p.m.
Location: Hale Kanikapila (formerly Hilo Town Tavern), 168 Keawe St.
This free monthly evening of astronomy, drinks, trivia and prizes is now on the second Wednesday of each month, featuring speakers from University of Hawai‘i Institute for Astronomy. June speakers are Rena Lee who is “Exploring Extreme Earths” and Willem Hoogendam presenting “Time Domain Astronomy Near and Far.”
