Julie Mitchell, executive director of Ku‘ikahi Mediation Center, will give attendees of an upcoming workshop some practical tools to put in place right away to become a better nonprofit board member or organization leader.

Mitchell is the featured presenter for the “Work Together Effectively As a Non-Profit Board” workshop from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on June 4 at the University of Hawai‘i at Hilo.

It is the next installment in Ku‘ikahi’s “Conflict Prevention & Resolution Training Series.”

Participants of this informative and interactive workshop will learn about:

  • The importance of corporate documents
  • Board roles, responsibilities and competencies
  • Best practices for committees, chairpersons and meetings
  • Healthy relations and lines of communication

“Whether you sit on a working board of a [nonprofit] with all volunteers or a governing board of an agency with professional staff, as a director you play an important role,” Mitchell said in a press release about the upcoming workshop.

Mitchell has 25 years of experience in the nonprofit field. She has previously worked as Volcano Art Center education coordinator and was general manager of Friends of Hawai‘i Volcanoes National Park.

Mitchell has a certificate in professional development for nonprofit Management from Hawai‘i Community College and received a 2016 AIM For Excellence Award for Outstanding Achievement in Non Profit Management.

She also sits on the board of directors for Zonta Club of Hilo and Zonta Club of Hilo Foundation boards of directors, serving as treasurer since 2018 for both nonprofits.

Mitchell received her bachelor of arts degree in sociology from University of California, Irvine.

Tuition for the “Work Together Effectively As a Non-Profit Board” workshop is $50, with group discounts and individual needs-based partial scholarships available.
