Weekly DUI arrests on Big Island roadways total 11 for April 27 through May 3

Eleven motorists were arrested for driving under the influence of an intoxicant during the week of April 27 through May 3.

Most of the arrests occurred in Kona, where five were taken into custody. Three were arrested in Hilo and there was one arrest each in North Hilo, South Kohala and Puna Districts.

Out of the 11 arrested, four of the drivers were involved in a traffic accident, and two of the drivers were under the age of 21.

So far this year, there have been 284 DUI arrests compared with 316 during the same period last year, a decrease of 10.13%, according to Hawai‘i Police Department.

Hawai‘i Police Department’s Traffic Services Section reviewed all updated crashes and found 334 major crashes so far this year, compared with 351 major crashes during the same time last year, a decrease of 4.84%.

As of May 3, there have been six fatal crashes, resulting in seven fatalities, compared with 10 fatal crashes, resulting in 11 fatalities for the same time last year. This is a decrease of 40% for fatal crashes and a decrease of 36.36% for fatalities.

In 2026, the non-traffic fatality count (not on a public roadway) was zero, compared to zero non-traffic fatalities for the same time last year.
