Florida woman dies after snorkeling incident at Hōnaunau Bay

Authorities are investigating a possible drowning after a Florida woman died Saturday while snorkeling at Hōnaunau Bay in South Kona.

Officials with the Hawai’i Police Department said officers were dispatched at about 11:47 a.m. on May 9 to the Hōnaunau Boat Ramp following reports of a swimmer in distress.

Investigators said 65-year-old Mindy Morris of Panama City, Florida, was snorkeling with family members in the bay when she began having trouble breathing. She reportedly continued to struggle as she returned to shore and later lost consciousness.

People nearby immediately began CPR and continued until emergency medical personnel arrived on the scene. Morris was then transferred to the Kona Community Hospital, where she was later pronounced dead.

Officials have opened a coroner’s inquest, and an autopsy has been scheduled to determine the exact cause of death.

Authorities added that foul play is not suspected.
