19 motorists arrested week of April 13-19 for driving under influence on Big Isle roadways
Hawai‘i Police Department continued its crackdown on motorists who choose to drive inebriated on Big Island roadways, arresting 19 motorists for driving under the influence of an intoxicant during the week of April 13-19.
Seven of the drivers were involved in traffic crashes; none were younger than 21 years old.
There have been 261 DUI arrests so far in 2026, a 10.92% decrease compared with the 293 during the same period in 2025.
Kona had the highest weekly total of DUI arrests with 8 motorists arrested. Hilo was only behind by two, reporting a total of 6 weekly arrests for driving under the influence.

Police report that DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue islandwide.
Hawai‘i Police Department Traffic Services Section also reviewed all updated crash reports, finding 296 major crashes so far this year, a decrease of 5.73% compared with the 314 major crashes reported during the same period last year.
There have been 4 fatal crashes resulting in 4 fatalities as of April 19 on Big Island roadways, representing a 60% decrease in fatal crashes and 63.64% decrease in fatalities compared with 10 fatal crashes resulting in 11 fatalities during the same time frame last year.
