Temporary water discoloration prompts testing in South Kohala area
The Hawaiʻi County Department of Water Supply is investigating reports of discolored tap water in parts of the Waimea and Kamuela area, officials said in a press release.
The discoloration has been reported in neighborhoods ranging from Lālāmilo Farm Lots to the Lakeland subdivision. Crews are actively flushing the water system while working to determine the cause, according to the Department of Water.
Water officials said recent routine testing of the South Kohala water system showed normal results, and there is no indication the water is contaminated.
The system continues to meet state and federal drinking water standards, and the water remains safe to drink. As a precaution, the department plans to conduct additional water quality testing in the affected areas this week.
Residents experiencing discolored water are advised to run cold water, preferably from a faucet at the lowest point in their home, for five to 10 minutes or until it clears. Officials also recommend avoiding hot water to prevent sediment from entering water heaters and delaying laundry involving light-colored clothing to avoid staining.
If the water does not clear after the initial flush, residents should wait 1 to 2 hours and try again. Those who continue to experience issues are encouraged to report the problem so crews can flush nearby water mains.
