Mother’s Day orchid show in Kona features local growers, vendors
On Saturday, May 2, the Kona Orchid Society will host its annual Mother’s Day Orchid Show, Plant and Craft Sale at Makaeo Pavilion in the Kona Old Airport State Recreation Area.
The event is set to feature displays of blooming orchids from society members, along with a wide selection of plants and handmade goods from local vendors.
Organizers said 13 plant growers and 17 craft vendors will participate, offering items ranging from orchids and succulents to jewelry, pottery and other gift items.
Food vendors also will be on site with a variety of snacks and locally made products.
The event is scheduled to run from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., with $2 cash admission. A limited early-bird entry from 8 to 9 a.m. offers advance access to plants for $20 per ticket.
Early bird tickets went on sale April 1 and are capped at 100 attendees.
Educational programming will be offered throughout the day, including free presentations on orchid care and cultivation.
Topics include Phalaenopsis schillerana, general orchid questions and guidance, and growing unusual orchid varieties suited to Kona conditions. Master Gardeners and representatives from Plant Pono and the Hawaiʻi Ant Lab also will be available to answer questions on plant care, invasive species and pest management.
The Kona Orchid Society, a nonprofit organization founded in 1985, promotes orchid education and appreciation through community events and monthly meetings. Organizers said the annual show aims to provide a family-friendly way to celebrate Mother’s Day while supporting local growers and artisans.
