We’re taking a different approach this week in the top 10 things to do on the Big Island and highlighting what you might call a “featured item” or “must go.”

Hilo Education Arts Repertory Theatre — or HEART — is hosting its 5th Anniversary Benefit Concert and Fundraiser at the beginning of next week on stage at the historic Palace Theater in downtown Hilo.

Hawai‘i County Mayor Kimo Alameda dances with the cast of the Hilo Education Arts Repertory Theatre, or HEART, production of “The Little Mermaid” after being asked if he wanted to be part of the show while he was watching a dress rehearsal Monday, March 17, 2025, at the Palace Theater in Hilo. HEART is about creating opportunities — opportunities that many keiki wouldn’t otherwise have. The youth theatre program is a cornerstone of the Hilo arts community, producing several beloved large-scale productions throughout the past 5 years.

Those shows included “Aladdin,” “Beauty and the Beast,” “The Little Mermaid” and “Grease.”

The theatre’s work also received statewide recognition, including five BroadwayWorld Awards, most recently earning Best Youth Theatre in the State of Hawaiʻi and Best Play for the acclaimed production of “A View from the Bridge.”

HEART gives hundreds of young people the chance to experience professional-quality theatre in a supportive, inclusive environment.

“This concert is a celebration of how far we’ve come — and a look toward where we’re going,” said HEART Producing Artistic Director Larry Reitzer in an announcement about the upcoming benefit concert.

Community support is more vital than ever this year as the program faces an unprecedented funding challenge after losing its largest grant because of widespread cuts to arts funds.

“When our community supports HEART, they are investing directly in our youth and in the future of the arts on Hawaiʻi Island,” Reitzer added in the announcement.

You’re also supporting the youth who participate, learning much more than getting their close-up.

“Live theatre doesn’t just teach kids how to sing or act,” Reitzer said. “It teaches them teamwork, discipline, empathy and confidence. It gives them a place to belong.”

This milestone event Monday (Feb. 9) will feature very special guest artist Matt Shingledecker, whose Broadway, Off-Broadway and national tour credits including starring roles in “Wicked,” “Les Misérables,” “West Side Story,” “Rent” and “Spring Awakening.”

He’ll be joined by Nashville singer-songwriter Hobo Cane (Javier Mendoza); HEART all-star Meili Aspen, who recently starred in the theatre’s productions of “Cabaret,” “Heathers” and “Chicago”; as well as island favorites Pomai Conant-Longakit and Kimo Apaka.

Tickets start at $20, with all proceeds and every donation made directly supporting HEART.

So if you don’t make it to any of the other 9 events in this week’s top 10, be sure to turn out to support Hilo’s youth theatre and the keiki it serves.

Sunday is also Super Bowl Sunday, though. So check out the Big Game Day events happening this weekend.
