Hawai‘i Island police investigate theft along Ali‘i Drive in Kona

Hawai‘i Island police seek the public’s help in identifying a suspect involved in a theft on Ali‘i Drive near Kahalu‘u Beach Park.
The incident occurred shortly after 6 p.m. on Jan. 18. According to police, a male reported that he left his belongings, valued at $340, on the side of the road near the 78-6600 block of Aliʻi Drive to cross the street to help someone in need.
Images provided by police show a male approaching various items, including a red cooler.
The release didn’t indicate what type of help the reported victim was offering.
At 6:09 p.m., a dark-colored extra-cab Nissan Frontier with an unknown license plate pulled up, and an unknown suspect allegedly removed the victim’s personal property. The suspect was described as a shirtless Caucasian man wearing dark-colored shorts.

The vehicle then left the scene heading north on Ali‘i Drive.
