A 40-year-old Kona man who proclaimed himself to be God while wielding a pipe and reportedly taking a couple of swings at a hotel night auditor and then later being identified as the alleged assailant of a shopping center security guard faces several charges in connection with the two violent incidents during the early morning of Dec. 2 in Kona.

Andrew Green

Andrew Green is charged with:

  • First-degree robbery.
  • First-degree terroristic threatening.
  • Second-degree theft.
  • First-degree unauthorized entry into a motor vehicle.
  • Third-degree assault.
  • Fourth-degree criminal property damage.

Green’s total bail was originally set at $66,100 and his initial court appearance was Dec. 4 in Kona District Court.

During the hearing, Green’s public defender requested he be released on self recognizance or his bail reduced. Prosecutors moved to maintain Green’s bail. Kona District Judge Kimberly Tsuchiya decided to reduce Green’s bail to an aggregate $25,000.

He remains in custody, according to online court records, and Tsuchiya ordered him to return to court at 3 p.m. Dec. 8 for a preliminary hearing.

Hawai‘i Island police report that Kona Patrol officers responded shortly before 2 a.m. Dec. 2 to a hotel in the 75-100 block of Sarona Road in Kona for a reported robbery.

The hotel’s 67-year-old night auditor reported that an unknown white male in his 30s entered the lobby holding a 4-foot pipe and yelled, “I am God and I can do or take whatever I want.”

The suspect — later identified as Green — jumped over the counter, swung the pipe twice at the victim and threatened him. The victim was not struck and was able to avoid injury.

Green then took the victim’s backpack and fled on foot. Patrol officers reviewed surveillance video and conducted area checks, but were unable to locate Green.

Kona Patrol officers responded later the same day, just before 6 a.m., to an unrelated assault at a shopping center in the 74-5500 block of Palani Road in Kona.

The 53-year-old security guard victim said that upon arriving for work, he encountered Green sitting outside a closed business.

The security guard, who was seated inside his vehicle, told Green he needed to leave, at which point Green reportedly became agitated and began punching the victim in the head, neck and jaw.

Green then broke the rain guard off the victim’s vehicle and used it to stab the man’s forearm, causing pain and redness.

The security guard was able to disarm Green before the 40-year-old fled the area. He also is the one to identify Green for authorities. He was treated at the scene by Hawai‘i Fire Department medics and released.

Officers following the direction of travel provided by the security guard, were able to locate Green near the 75-900 block of Henry Street and arrested him.

Police also determined — as the investigation progressed — that Green was also responsible for the earlier robbery and terroristic threatening incident at the Sarona Road Hotel, and he was subsequently arrested in connection with that incident as well.

Kona Patrol officers on Dec. 3 were able to recover the 67-year-old hotel night auditor’s stolen backpack from Ali‘i Drive, near Kailua Pier, and returned it to the victim.

Detectives from Hawai‘i Police Department Area II Criminal Investigation Section continued the investigation.
