40-year-old charged with murder for shooting a man in Mountain View parking lot

Forty-year-old Joseph Davis is scheduled to make his initial appearance in Hilo District Court Friday morning for the shooting death of a 52-year-old earlier this week in the parking lot of the Mountain View Mini Mart.

On Wednesday, Davis was charged with second-degree murder, us of a firearm in a commission of a felony and place to keep ammunition. His bail was set at $1.5 million.

The victim has been identified as 52-year-old John Marshall Marrou, of Volcano. Police say Marrou was shot three times with a .38 caliber Taurus revolver. An autopsy has been scheduled for Friday morning.

Around 1:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Puna patrol officers responded to a report of a man being shot multiple times in the parking lot of the Mini Mart. Callers also reported that the suspect was still at the scene and in possession of the firearm.

Upon arrival at the scene, officers immediately arrested Davis for second-degree murder. He was transported to the East Hawai’i Detection Facility in Hilo.

Upon arrest, Davis was found in possession of a small zippered bag which witnesses observed him placing a firearm into following the shooting.

Davis’ bag and a bicycle he arrived at the store on were recovered as evidence.

Area I Criminal Investigation Section detectives executed a search warrant on the bag, and a pistol matching the description of the weapon used in the incident was recovered. A search warrant was also executed on bags on the bicycle and additional ammunition was recovered.
