Officer Gusman to be honored on Wednesday during a luncheon in Kailua-Kona
The public can celebrate and support Hawaiʻi County police during this month’s Officer of the Month luncheon.
On Wednesday, police will honor Officer Michael Gusman for his exceptional investigative work and dedication to duty during the Kona Crime Prevention Committee’s luncheon.
Lt. Kevin Brodie, who leads the department’s Special Response Team, is set to speak at the luncheon and will share insights into how the Special Response Team operates, including the roles and responsibilities of its members, the training they undergo, and situations in which the team is activated.
Brodie has served with the Hawaiʻi County Police Department for more than 16 years. Earlier in his career, he worked as a patrol officer in South Hilo, where he was recognized by the Aloha Exchange Club of East Hawaiʻi as “Officer of the Month” in 2013.
Brodie was a detective in Area 1 and part of the Special Response Team, rising through ranks that emphasize both field operations and investigative work.
A particularly notable moment in his career came in 2019, when he was named the Hawaiʻi State Law Enforcement Officials Association Officer of the Year for his valor and quick thinking following the tragic killing of Officer Bronson Kaliloa. Brodie played a critical role in apprehending the suspect and providing emergency first aid to another officer who had been wounded.
Earlier this year, he was promoted to the rank of lieutenant and assigned to command the Special Response Team.
The luncheon will be at Huggo’s Restaurant, 75-5828 Kahakai Rd., Kailua-Kona, at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 1. Tickets are required, but online purchases have ended, and entry must be purchased at the door.
Members can pay $30, and nonmembers are $35.
