Update: Fire break established around Mana Road fire on Mauna Kea

Update 7:19 a.m. Aug. 12, 2025: Hawai‘i County Civil Defense Agency reports a fire break has been established around the wildfire on the east slope of Mauna Kea.

Update 7:02 a.m. Aug. 12, 2025: The Mana Road fire has burned approximately 20 acres after 12 hours and is now 30% contained as of this morning.

Hawai‘i Fire Chief Kazuo Todd said DLNR’s Division of Forestry and Wildlife along with firefighters from Pōhakuloa Training Area are assisting in battling the blaze. The Department of Transportation also has provided tankers.

Fire officials are reporting that smoke may still be visible in the area. Mana Road will remain closed; however, Mauna Kea Access Road has reopened.

According to DLNR officials, helicopters were called in to do water drops to douse the flames. DOFAW crews will continue to wet the perimeter of the fire to ensure it doesn’t spread.

Original post 7: 34 p.m. Aug. 11, 2025: A wildfire on the east slope of Maunakea sparked this afternoon, according to the Hawai’i County Civil Defense Agency.

The Hawai‘i Fire Department was dispatched at approximately 6:43 p.m. to Maunakea off of Mana Road and is currently on the scene.

Mauna kea Access Road and Mana Road are closed, along with the Maunakea visitor center.

Fire officials are urging the public to be cautious of the visible smoke.
