Detailed Forecast

Synopsis

Light winds and dry conditions prevail for the next several days bringing a prolonged stretch of benign weather. Haze is possible for a few days due to vog emissions from Halema'uma'u. A front will approach from the northwest late next week bringing a chance of showers to the region.

Discussion

A strong Pacific jet remains across the north central Pacific. This will maintain expansive ridging to its south with a surface ridge axis just north of Kauai. Meanwhile, the trade wind belt remains suppressed south of the state. This pattern supports moderate east-southeast trade winds over the eastern end of the state, with lighter winds elsewhere. Local afternoon sea breezes and overnight land breezes will be common, especially in sheltered areas. Active mid- level subsidence, light winds, and no apparent upstream moisture source favor dry and benign weather for the next several days. The biggest impact in the short-term remains the potential for haze due to vog emissions from Halema'uma'u. Guidance then shows a front approaching from the northwest late next week which looks to bring a chance of showers to mainly Kauai and Oahu.

Aviation

A surface ridge north of the islands will support light SE winds over Kauai and Oahu, and light to moderate E winds over Maui and Hawaii Counties. A strengthening ridge aloft will lead to increasing stability, with limited precipitation falling from stable low clouds with tops at 8000 feet or lower. ISOL MVFR CIG can be expected windward, and no AIRMETs are anticipated.

Marine

A ridge north of Hawaii will drive moderate east southeast winds through tonight before a weakening trade winds form Friday into next week as the ridge moves closer to the state.
A west northwest swell will decline tonight pushing surf below the advisory threshold for north and west facing shores. Therefore, the High Surf Advisory is cancelled for north and west facing shores of Niihau, Kauai, Oahu, Molokai and west facing shores of the Big Island. Another northwest swell is due late Saturday into early next week with peak surf heights likely reaching warning levels along north and west facing shores. Yet another similar sized northwest swell is due in late Tuesday.
Small surf is expected along east facing shores over the next week as trade winds remain light. Surf along south facing shores should see a small boost as a small south swell fills in through the end of the week.
