21 motorists arrested for DUI on Big Island roads last week
Twenty-one motorists were arrested on Big Island roads for driving under the influence during the week of Feb. 10-16.
Seven of the drivers were involved in a traffic crash and two were under the age of 21, according to a press release from Hawai‘i Island police Wednesday.
According to police, Hilo had the most arrests with 11. Trailing behind in second was Kona, with four arrests, three in South Kohala and one in North Kohala.

So far this year, there have been 127 DUI arrests compared with 130 during the same period last year, a decrease of 2.31%.
Hawai‘i Police Department’s Traffic Services Section reviewed all updated crashes and found 113 major crashes so far this year, compared with 119 major crashes during the same time last year, a decrease of 5.04%.
To date, there have been six fatal crashes, resulting in seven fatalities (one fatal crash was reclassified to a medical condition, one fatal crash had multiple deaths) compared with five fatal crashes, resulting in five fatalities for the same time last year. This represents an increase of 20% for fatal crashes, and 40 percent for fatalities.
To date, the non-traffic fatality count (not on a public roadway) is zero, compared to zero non-traffic fatalities for the same time last year.
DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue islandwide.
