13 motorists arrested for DUI week of Nov. 18-24
Hawaiʻi Police Department continues its crackdown on motorists who choose to drive under the influence on Big Island roadways, making 13 DUI arrests during the week of Nov. 18-24.
One of the drivers was involved in a traffic crash. One was younger than 21 years old.
Big Island police had made 873 DUI arrests so far this year by the end of that week, a 2.95% increase compared with 848 during the same period last year.

The Hawaiʻi Police Department Traffic Services Section reviewed all updated crashes and found there have been 891 major crashes so far this year in 2024 compared with 762 by this time in 2023, an increase of 17%.
There have been a total of 26 fatal crashes resulting in 28 fatalities in 2024 so far compared with 14 fatal crashes and 15 fatalities during the same time period last year, representing a shocking 85.7% spike in fatal wrecks and 86.7% increase in fatalities.
The non-traffic fatality count so far this year has risen to 1 compared to none in 2023.
Police said DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue islandwide.
