18 motorists arrested for DUI during week of Nov. 4-10 on Big Island roadways
Hawai‘i Island police continued their crackdown the week of Nov. 4-10 on motorists who choose to drive under the influence of an intoxicant on Big Island roadways, making 18 DUI arrests.
Eight of the drivers were involved in traffic crashes. One of the drivers was younger than 21 years old.
Data as of Nov. 10 showed there had been 832 DUI arrests so far this year, an increase of 1.34% from the 821 made by the same time last year.
Numbers of DUI arrests by districts were:
Hawai‘i Police Department’s Traffic Services Section reviewed all updated crashes and found there have been 855 major crashes so far in 2024, an increase of 18.1% from the 724 by this time in 2023.
There have been 25 fatal crashes and 27 fatalities to date this year, increases of 100% compared with the 13 fatal crashes and 14 fatalities on Big Island roadways by this time last year.
There have still been no non-traffic fatalities — those that do not happen on a public roadway — this year, the same as in 2023.
Hawai‘i Police Department reports DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue islandwide.
