Update: Winter weather advisory canceled for summits Mauna Kea, Mauna Loa
Update at 3:24 p.m. Oct. 28: While a few snow showers will be possible this evening, the threat for impactful winter weather has decreased.
Therefore, the winter weather advisory that was previously in effect for the summits of Mauna Kea and Mauna Loa has been canceled.
Original post from 8:32 a.m. Oct. 28: The summits of Mauna Kea and Mauna Loa on the Big Island are under another winter weather advisory until 6 p.m. today as deep moisture continues to move over the area today, leading to periods of rain and snow.
Additional snow accumulation of up to 3 inches, mainly this morning, is forecast.
The public is advised that travel at the summits could be very difficult.
Blowing snow will significantly reduce visibility at times, including periods of zero visibility. Be prepared for slippery roads.
This is the second day the summits have faced wintry conditions. Up to 6 inches of snow were possible yesterday when both mountaintops were under their first winter weather advisory associated with the deep moisture moving over the state.
The snowy situation Sunday caused quite the stir amid the public, with photos of a snow-blanketed Mauna Kea being shared across social media and the Maunakea Visitor Information Station declaring: “Winter is here.”
