Thrills, chills and family fun abound Oct. 27 to get Big Islanders into Halloween spirit

The Halloween haunts continue today on the Big Island, with several haunted attractions beckoning thrill seekers to venture through their doors or journey down their trail to face the ghastly ghouls, goblins and other terrifying tricksters lurking around every corner hoping to give you something to scream about.

There’s also still time to catch some of the family friendly spooky season fun that will get the entire ‘ohana in the holiday spirit, including the second afternoon of Boo at the Zoo and ‘Ohana Pumpkin Patch at Nani Mau Gardens in Hilo.

You can also celebrate Halloween like never before by participating in the Green Dragon Ancestral Awakening Halloween Tribal Qigong Celebration and immersing yourself in an unforgettable spiritual journey filled with joy, love, release and profound understanding.

  • The Haunted Trail: Chapter 24 — Hide N Seek
    11 a.m. to 5 p.m. and 6 to 9 p.m. Oct. 27-31, Nani Mau Gardens, Hilo
    Tropical beauty is possessed by the dead on this terrifying trail, where a sinister doll beckons you into a twisted game of hide and seek. Do you dare to play with evil? Venture misty pathways where the restless undead roam. The chilling cries of victims echo as grotesque beasts prepare a ghastly feast. Shadows lurk with evil spirits, eager to claim another soul. Keep moving and avoid getting trapped forever … because the doll is never far behind. Will you survive the night, or become another lost soul on the trail? Daylight hours are less intense so the entire family can enjoy the trail. Nighttime is the full-scare experience and recommended only for those 18 and older, unless accompanied by a parent. There will be bright flashing lights. No running allowed. No guests with known heart conditions. All guests must sign a personal liability waiver. Cost: $5 daytime, only at the gate; $15 in advance, $20 at the gate for nighttime.
  • ‘Ohana Pumpkin Patch
    11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Oct. 27-31, Nani Mau Gardens, Hilo
    Bring the entire ‘ohana for a magical day of autumn fun and the perfect family friendly Halloween adventure. There’s pumpkins galore, fun Halloween inflatables, free keiki and adults games and plenty of tasty treats and island favorites to enjoy all day long. For more info: www.nanimaugardens.com
  • 2nd annual Boo at the Zoo
    3 to 6 p.m. Oct. 27, Panaʻewa Rainforest Zoo & Gardens, Hilo
    Trick-or-treaters and their ‘ohana can look forward to treats, animal tours, story time, food vendors, face painting, a keiki costume contest and more. Cash-only event. Friends of the Panaʻewa Zoo will sell trick-or-treat bags for $1, which will be required to receive treats. Proceeds will enhance the zoo and exhibits.
  • Green Dragon Ancestral Awakening Halloween Tribal Qigong Celebration
    5:30 to 8 p.m. Oct. 27, Hawaiian Sanctuary, Pāhoa

  • The Living Dead Haunted House
    6 to 9 p.m. Oct. 27-28, Hilo High School Auditorium, Hilo
    The students of the Hilo High School Performing Arts Scaring Center welcome all banshees and ghouls to a truly terrifying experience. They’ve worked hard to show you such shocking sights, from zombies, skeletons and … weird little guys, so don’t waste any time. Come down this weekend to see for yourself. All proceeds go to a good claws! The event uses flashing lights, fog and loud noises, and part of the walking path involves a stairway. Cost: $5.
  • Hilo’s Haunted House
    6 to 10 p.m. Oct. 27, Butler Building at Ho‘olulu Park, Hilo
    The ghouls and goblins are coming out to play. Zombies, creatures and monsters lurk around every corner. This all-ages event is not for the faint of heart but promises fun for everyone. So gather your fellow thrill seekers and come out for a hauntingly good time that’s sure to send shivers down your spine. Be sure to scare up an appetite, too. Toasty Dogs and Aloe Kine Smoothies are creeping into the night, ready to serve their frighteningly delicious dogs and one-of-a-kind smoothies to any and all who have the courage to face the terrors that await.
  • Candy Crawl
    4 to 6 p.m. Oct. 31 (registration now open), Keauhou Shopping Center, Kailua-Kona
    This family-friendly event features trick-or-treating, live entertainment and free activities including balloon twisting, glitter tattoos and a bounce house. Check in at the courtyard.
