The crackdown continues on motorists who drive under the influence of an intoxicant on Big Island roadways.
Police arrested 22 motorists for DUI during the week of July 1-7. Five of them were involved in traffic crashes.
So far this year, there have been a total of 505 DUI arrests compared with 506 during the same period last year. That represents a decrease of 0.2%.

Hawai‘i Police Department’s Traffic Services Section reviewed all updated crashes and found 518 major crashes so far in 2024 compared with 442 by this time last year, an increase of 17.19%.

To date, there have been 18 fatal crashes, resulting in 20 fatalities, on Big Island roadways, so far this year compared with 9 fatal crashes, resulting in 10 fatalities, during the same time frame last year. That represents an increase of 100% in fatal crashes and 100% in fatalities.
The non-traffic fatality count is zero so far this year, the same as it was at this time last year.
DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue islandwide.
