Update: Flood advisory extended for large portion of Big Island
Update at 2:07 a.m. May 15: The flood advisory in effect for the Big Island has been cancelled.
Update at 4:41 p.m. May 14: The flood advisory in effect for a large portion of the Big Island has been extended until 7 p.m.
At 3:46 p.m., National Weather Service radar indicated slow moving heavy rain showers continuing mainly over the upper slopes of the Hilo, South Kohala and Kona districts. The heaviest rain was falling near Waikii at a rate of up to 2 inches per hour.
Original post from 1:21 p.m. May 14: A flood advisory is in effect until 4 p.m. today for east, north and west portions of the Big Island.
Just before 1 p.m., National Weather Service radar indicated slow moving heavy rain showers mainly over the slopes of the Hilo, Hāmākua, Kohala and Kona districts.
The heaviest precipitation was falling over the slopes of South Hilo, with rain falling at a rate of up to 2 inches per hour.
Some locations that will experience flooding include Hilo, Kailua-Kona, Waikōloa Village, Honokaʻa, Pōhakuloa Camp, Pōhakuloa Training Area, Waimea, Paʻauilo, Waipiʻo Valley, ʻŌʻōkala, Kukuihaele, Laupāhoehoe, Waimanu Valley, Puʻuhuluhulu, Nīnole, Honomū, Hakalau, Pepeʻekeo, Pāpaʻikou and Volcano.
Minor flooding on roads, poor drainage areas and in streams can be expected. The public is advised to stay away from low-lying areas prone to flooding.
Additional heavy rain showers will be possible through the afternoon.
