Update: Wind advisory issued for Big Island is canceled

5:29 p.m. March 5 update: The wind advisory for portions of the Big Island has been canceled.

Original post: A wind advisory is in effect for portions of the Big Island till 6 p.m.

According to the National Weather Service in Honolulu, northeast winds of 20 to 30 mph will sweep across Kohala, Kona, Ka‘ū Districts and the Island Interiors with localized gusts of 50 mph. The advisory is also in effect for Kaho‘olawe, Lana‘i, and portions of Maui and Moloka‘i.

Winds this strong can tear off shingles, knock down tree branches, blow away tents and awnings and make it difficult to steer, especially for drivers of high-profile vehicles.

Watch out for falling tree branches when walking or driving. Make sure tents and awnings are secure or take them down. Be prepared for power outages.
