Update: High surf advisory for Big Island’s north-facing shores extended through today

Update at 7:54 a.m. Nov. 21: A high surf advisory for north-facing shores of the Big Island has been extended until 6 p.m. today as the large north-northwest swell that brought warning level surf Monday will transition out of the north today and continue to diminish for the next couple of days.

The National Weather Service in Honolulu says large breaking waves of 15 to 20 feet, becoming 12 to 16 in the afternoon, are possible along the island’s northern shorelines.

Strong breaking waves and strong currents will make swimming dangerous in the advisory locations. The public should heed all advice from ocean safety officials. When in doubt, don’t go out.

Original post from 5:07 p.m. Nov. 20: A high surf advisory is in effect till Tuesday at 6 a.m. for north-facing shores of Hawai‘i Island.

Large breaking waves of 12 to 16 feet are expected from Upolu Point in North Kohala to Cape Kumukahi in Puna. These strong currents will make swimming dangerous.

Head all advice from ocean safety officials. When in doubt, don’t go out.
