Ka‘ū sirens triggered after an attempted break-in where equipment is stored
Update at 10:45 a.m. Tuesday: Hawai‘i County Civil Defense Administrator Talmadge Magno said the siren was triggered after someone attempted to break into where the siren’s equipment is located. The padlock was cut and county officials found the utility box door ajar.
This is the second time someone has attempted to break into the siren housing area. Magno said the first time was over a year ago. As a result, the county set the siren to go off in the event of another break-in.
Just last week, Magno said someone attempted to break into the utility box for a siren in Hilo.
Original post: The outdoor sirens located in Hawaiian Oceanview Estates in Ka‘ū at Reef Parkway malfunctioned twice at approximately 7:30 and 9 this morning.
There is no emergency at this time.
State and County officials are investigating what caused the malfunction.
