Big Island Now poll No. 26: What do you bring to a Labor Day cookout?
Today marks Labor Day — the official end of summer, the end of wearing white and the start of the new school year.
The federal holiday is celebrated on the first Monday in September to honor and recognize the American labor movement and the workers’ contributions during America’s Industrial Revolution. In 1894, President Grover Cleveland signed a law making Labor Day a national holiday.
The three-day weekend is now known for its parties, sometimes holiday shopping and most commonly a barbecue.
