‘Toil and Trouble’ opens at Aloha Theatre Aug. 4
Aloha Theatre in Kainaliu will be premiering on Aug. 4 Lauren Gunderson’s “Toil and Trouble,” a comedic rendition of Shakespeare’s “Macbeth.”
Described as is an “unexpected, fantastical, and funny take on the classic play” and “an uber-capitalist hipster Macbeth,” “Toil and Trouble” is a story about underemployed friends Adam, Matt and Beth who are desperate to beat the recession any way they can. They combine forces to take over a small island in South America, but when a fortune cookie tells Matt that he will rule and Beth gets a little too handy with a dagger, plans go awry.
The hilarious adaptation of Shakespeare’s “Macbeth” pits friend against friend, ambition against fate, and pet-sitting against miniature vicuna mogul-dom.
The production is led by Artistic Director Sara Athans, with Tyra Iaela as assistant
director and features performances from Taylor Deskin as Beth, Miles Gerlach as Adam, and
Jamie Hughes as Matt.
Costumes were designed by Lindsay Roth and the set design was led by Tyra Iaela and Sara Athans. Hal Snyder over saw set construction, and Nu’u Crouch will be managing the sound. Light show is orchestrated by Jeff Rowand.
This production is appropriate for ages 13 and up, and does include strong language, references to death, drugs, alcohol, and sexual situations. Fake blood is used onstage. The show is approximately 90 minutes long with no intermission.
Concessions, including beer and wine, will be available for purchase at the theatre. The show will run until Aug. 20.
Tickets are available now for $25 for adults, $23 for seniors and $10 for youth at alohatheatre.com.
