Kanu o ka ʻĀina Charter School in Waimea awarded $150,000 grant

Kanu o ka ʻĀina New Century Public Charter School in Waimea has been awarded a $150,000 grant from the Office of Hawaiian Affairs to support unmet facility’s needs.

The school is one of the 17 Hawaiian Focused Charter Schools awarded $3 million over the next two school years to support unmet facility’s needs. Charter students face substantial underfunding despite the fact that charter schools, as public institutions, are not permitted to charge tuition, according to the school’s news release.

This project aligns with the Office of Hawaiian Affairs Strategic Direction of Educational Pathways to support education through Hawaiian language medium and focused charter school.

The purpose of Kanu o ka ʻĀina New Century Public Charter School is to provide students of Hawaiian ancestry, and all who honor the ways of Hawaiian kūpuna, with an equal opportunity to quality education that addresses their distinctive cultural learning styles.
