June flight operations over Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park

Hawai‘i Volcanoes National Park announced its flight operations for June 2023.

They are:

June 8 — 9 a.m. and 4 p.m.: Multiple flights are planned by USGS Hawaiian Volcano Observatory to retrieve temporary seismic instruments in areas west of Kīlauea Crater and south to Hilina Pali Road.

June 21 — 9 a.m. and noon: Sling loads of fence replacement along the Kapāpala Ranch and park boundary around the 4,000-foot elevation.

June 29 — 6:15 a.m. to noon: For ʻuaʻu (Hawaiian petrel) monitoring on Mauna Loa between elevations of 4,000 and 9,000 feet.

In addition, the Hawaiian Volcano Observatory may conduct several low-level helicopter flights in June at Kīlauea caldera and Mauna Loa to assess volcanic activity and maintain instrumentation.

“The park regrets any noise impact to residents and park visitors,” according to a press release from the park.

Dates and times are subject to change based on aircraft availability and weather.

Management of the park requires the use of aircraft to monitor and research volcanic activity, conduct search-and-rescue missions and law enforcement operations, support management of natural and cultural resources, and to maintain backcountry facilities.
