Update: Flood advisory extended until 7 p.m. for most of Hawai‘i County

Updated May 30 at 4:20 p.m.: The National Weather Service has extended its flood advisory until 7 p.m. At 4:10 p.m., radar indicated heavy rain over much of the Big Island. Rain was falling at a rate of 1 to 1.5 inches per hour.

Original post: The National Weather Service has issued a flood advisory for the following districts: South Kohala, North Kona, South Kona and Ka‘u.

A flood advisory means minor flooding is imminent or occurring.

Due to the flood advisory, be advised:

• Flooding can be life-threatening. Residents in flood prone areas are asked to remain alert for flooding conditions.
• Please drive with caution. Be on the alert for run-off, ponding of water, debris, and poor visibility.
• Do not attempt to cross flowing water in a vehicle or on foot; turn around, don’t drown.
• Remember, if lightning threatens your area, the safest place to be is indoors.

The advisory is in affect until 4:15 p.m.
