West Hawai‘i County Band presenting free ‘Memorable May’ concert

The West Hawai’i County Band has announced Memorable May, a concert presented free to the public at at Hale Hālāwai on Ali‘i Drive in Kailua-Kona on May 28.

The concert starts at 4 p.m. Audience members should consider bringing along their own beach chair to be most comfortable.

In honor of those who have served, the band has chosen the theme “Memorable May” for the next Free Monthly Concert. For this patriotic concert selections will include “God Bless America,” “America the Beautiful” and “Appalachian Morning,” evoking the early morning hours in the mountains of Appalachia.

Marches will include the ever-popular “American Patrol,” Sousa’s “US Field Artillery” and a march by noted comic Red Skelton, appropriately titled “Red’s White & Blue.” And in anticipation of the King Kamehameha Day parade in June the band will include “The Kona March.”

The West Hawai‘i County Band will be led by guest director Richard Shields. This concert series is brought to the public in part by the County of Hawai’i Parks and Recreation Department and the West Hawai‘i County Band Friends.

The West Hawai’i County Band is a community and civic band comprised of approximately 20 musicians from all walks of life. The band is supported in part by the County of Hawai’i Parks and Recreation Department.

The band rehearses weekly and performs regular monthly concerts at Hale Hālāwai in Kailua-Kona. In addition the band can be heard at parades and civic events in the community throughout the year.

The repertoire of the band includes march favorites, traditional brass band music, big band tunes, musical scores and Hawaiian traditional tunes.
