Office of Aging Warns of Number Request Scam
The Hawaii County Office of Aging has issued a warning to elderly persons to be careful about giving out personal information, including their social security numbers.
Alan Parker, the office’s director, said the public should beware of an unknown person calling and claiming to be an agent for the Office of Aging. The caller claims that the person’s number was obtained from AARP and offers certain benefits in exchange for the persons’s social security number.
The county Office of Aging does not call and request social security numbers, Parker said. Anyone receiving a call from a stranger seeking personal information, including credit card numbers or financial institution account numbers, should notify police at 935-3311.
