Update: Flood advisory for Kaʻū, Puna districts is canceled
Update at 5:45 p.m. on March 22: The National Weather Service has canceled the flood advisory for the Kaʻū and Puna Districts of Hawaiʻi Island.
Update at 3:15 p.m. on March 22: The National Weather Service has extended a flood advisory for the Kaʻū and Puna Districts of Hawaiʻi Island until 6:15 p.m. on Wednesday.
At 2:56 p.m., radar and automated rain gauges indicated heavy rain over southeast Big Island. Rain was falling at a rate of 0.5 to 1.5 inches per hour.
Some locations that will experience flooding include: Hawaiian Paradise Park, Wood Valley, Pāhala, Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park, Punaluu Beach, Kawa Flats, Volcano, Naʻalehu, Glenwood, Mountain View, Hawaiian Ocean View, Hawaiian Acres, Orchidland Estates, Pahoa, Waiohinu, Discovery Harbour, Hawaiʻi Volcanoes Park Kahuku Unit, Fern Forest and Eden Roc.
Hawaiʻi County Civil Defense has issued the following:
- All residents in flood prone areas are asked to remain alert for flooding conditions.
- Heavy rainfall and ponding can cause hazardous driving conditions.
- Be aware that road closures may occur anytime without warning.
- Do not attempt to cross flowing water in your vehicle or on foot; turn around, don’t drown.
