Man survives shark attack at Anaeho’omalu Bay on Big Island
A male swimmer in his 60s was attacked by a shark about 200 yards offshore of Anaeho’omalu Bay on the Big Island on Sunday afternoon, according to the Hawai’i Fire Department.
The man was able to a make it to a catamaran that was moored in the bay. The catamaran’s crew helped him on board and helped control bleeding to his upper and lower extremities.
First responders arrived at about 12:45 p.m. Ski-2 transported the man from the catamaran to the beach where fire rescue personnel were waiting.
The man was treated for injuries to his left hand and back of his left leg and transported to the North Hawai’i Hospital.
The kind and size of the shark is not known, according to the fire department.
